Community House Life at the farm centers around the Community House. It is here that we share weekly meals and hold many events. In the immediate vicinity of the Community House, you'll find the sauna, orchards, blueberry field, community garden, poultry yard, greenhouse, garage, tool shed, play area, natural spring, and more. The house itself is an old 3 bedroom farmhouse, a little rough around the edges but much loved. This permaculture model works well for us, drawing members out of their private dwellings to work together in the sharing of resources. Working on the farm Most of us work at least part of the week in outside employment-carpentry, technical drawing, restaurant management, and education. Some of us are able to work at least partially at home, others commute 30-60 minutes. There is very little local employment. We hope to move away from wage slavery as we create more sustainable infrastructure at Finney Farm. As for working on the farm... Our policies require a one hour per day model of labor contribution; however, in all seasons but the winter we seem to average 20 hours per week. This is spent working in the gardens or orchards, maintaining the grounds, pruning, clearing blackberries, preparing for and holding events, working on new projects, and more. Social Life We are very social! We have many people in our outside community of friends and family who spend time regularly at Finney Farm. In the winter we tend to share meals several times a week, and hold frequent saunas. In the spring we hold work parties, saunas, and continue shared meals. Summer brings lots of outdoor cooking, swimming in the creek, the Southside Social and Barn Dance, and a large amount of visitors. We spend a lot of time as a group harvesting and processing food for storage in the fall; as well as meals, saunas, and a trip to the Okanogan Barter Faire. Meetings and Such We currently hold one farm meeting each month to discuss business matters, upcoming events, proposals, work projects, and more. These are usually held on Sunday mornings, and last about 2 hours. We operate through consensus, which we find to be the most inclusive method of decision making. We recommend that members receive training in non-violent communication, as we find the method is easily partnered with consensus. We also meet once a year for our Annual Meeting. Interested parties are welcome to attend monthly meetings. |
